Evidence-based nursing is an approach that integrates the latest scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patient preferences into clinical decision-making to improve patient care outcomes. Self-directed learning is an essential component of evidence-based nursing practice.

Dr Neerja Sood, Asst. Professor of Nursing at IGNOU, shared her insights on enhancing self-directed learning abilities among nursing students. Dr Sood said. ‘students have varying study skills , teacher need to guide and mentor each student from the beginning for them to be successful.’ She also said that ‘nursing students need to develop self-directed learning skills’.

Prof Latha Venkatesan, President of CNRS North Zone, spoke about the need for innovative methods to demonstrate that students have acquired competencies outlined in the recently implemented competency-based nursing curriculum in India.  She emphasized the effectiveness of game-based learning in engaging students and facilitating collaborative learning through discussions and sharing of knowledge.

Queen’s University Belfast has pioneered several game-learning initiatives, including the Evidence-based Nursing game. Already widely used by nursing student across the UK. Dr Garry Mitchell from Queen’s University Belfast shared his reflections on the development of the game and thanked  Prof Latha Venkatesan for her expert review for its use in India.  Dr Mitchell expressed his eagerness to collaborate further with nurse educators in India to create learning resources that can inspire nursing students to excel in developing competencies.

Melvin Bell, Founder Director of Focus Games, highlighted the importance of evidence-based practice (EBP) in nursing education and the relevance of the Evidence-Based Nursing game in instilling passion and confidence among students. Evidence-based practice has a direct link to the quality of patient care.

To support the adoption of evidence-based practice in nurse education, Focus Games is organizing a series of webinars and training sessions in association with Clinical Nursing Research Society (CNRS), North Zone, India.
